AliExpress discounts are not one system, they are five stacked on top of each other, and the difference between using one and using all of them is usually double digits. This guide is the map: what each layer is, which one to send you deeper on, and the two things about AliExpress spend tiers that almost nobody gets right.

Short version: clear the nearest spend threshold, then stop. Above about $35 the effective discount rate stops improving, so spending more to reach a bigger tier rarely pays.

The Five Discount Layers

Before stacking anything, know what you are stacking. AliExpress savings sit in separate layers, which is exactly why several can apply to one order:

  • Item discount: the seller’s own markdown, already in the listing price. Nothing to do.
  • Seller or store coupon: claimed on the product or store page, valid only with that seller.
  • Sale code: a platform code with a minimum spend, entered at checkout. This is what most people mean by an AliExpress coupon, and it is where the spend tier maths below applies.
  • AliExpress Coins: earned through app activity, redeemed at checkout for a small final reduction.
  • New account offer: a separate set available only on a first order, covered in detail further down.

The order of operations matters. Claim the seller coupon first, on the product page. Apply the sale code at checkout. Redeem Coins last. For the full breakdown of which layers combine and which quietly cancel each other out, our guide to AliExpress promo codes for new users works through it layer by layer with a tested example.

How AliExpress Spend Tiers Actually Work

Sale codes are tiered by spend, and the ladder looks like it rewards bigger baskets. We ran the numbers on a full tier set to check. It does not.

Here is what the effective discount rate looks like across a complete set of eight tiers, from a recent sale event:

TierMinimum spendEffective rate
$2 off$1811.1%
$5 off$3514.3%
$10 off$6914.5%
$16 off$10914.7%
$23 off$16913.6%
$35 off$23914.6%
$55 off$37914.5%
$70 off$49914.0%

The lowest tier is the only bad one, at 11.1%. Everything from $35 upward sits between 13.6% and 14.7%, which is effectively flat.

So the advice that gets repeated everywhere, add more to your cart to unlock a bigger discount, is only true in one narrow sense. It is worth clearing the next threshold. It is not worth climbing the ladder, because a $499 order is not discounted at a better rate than a $69 one.

Tier amounts change with each event, so check the live ones on our AliExpress codes page before you build a cart around them. The shape of the ladder tends to hold even when the numbers move.

The Threshold Cliffs Worth Knowing

Because tiers are steps rather than a slope, a single dollar at the right moment is worth a lot. Sitting one dollar below a threshold is the most expensive place to be on AliExpress.

If your basket isAdding $1 gains you
$34$3 more off
$68$5 more off
$108$6 more off
$168$7 more off
$238$12 more off
$378$20 more off
$498$15 more off

The gap at $378 is the big one. One more dollar of spend returns twenty. If your cart lands anywhere near that figure, adding the cheapest item you actually want is the highest-return dollar you will spend on the platform.

The practical habit: before checking out, look at the next threshold up. If the gap costs less than the extra discount, close it. If it does not, stop.

Why Region Changes the Numbers but Not the Rate

AliExpress runs different codes in different markets, and the figures look dramatically different. One region offers MX$250 off, another offers $2 off. People reasonably assume some markets are being treated far better than others.

We compared the top regional offer in each market against its own spend threshold:

RegionTop offerEffective rate
United States$20 off $13914.4%
MexicoMX$250 off MX$1,80013.9%
Germany, Spain, Portugal€20 off €14913.4%
United Kingdom£15 off £12012.5%
BrazilR$55 off R$44012.5%
AustraliaA$21 off A$16912.4%

Every market lands between 12.4% and 14.4%. The absolute numbers differ enormously, the rate barely moves.

Two things follow. Trying to use another country’s code will not get you a better deal even if it worked, and it usually will not, because codes are locked to the region they were issued for. And if you see a code quoted in a currency that is not yours, it is not a missed opportunity, it is the same discount expressed differently.

Sale Codes Expire in Days, New Account Codes Last Months

This is a structural difference that changes how you plan, and it is easy to miss because both sets are called coupons.

Event sale codes are tied to the event. A typical promotional window runs about a week, and the codes die with it. New account codes run on their own schedule and are commonly valid for a couple of months at a time.

What that means in practice: if you are waiting for a sale, your new account discount will still be there when it starts. The sale codes will not wait for you.

New accounts can use both sets, and which one wins depends entirely on basket size rather than on which sounds bigger. That comparison, with the crossover point worked out, is in our AliExpress new user promo code guide.

The Warm-Up Window Most People Miss

AliExpress sale events do not simply switch on. They run a warm-up period of a day or two before the codes activate, during which sale pricing is visible but the codes are not yet live.

A recent event illustrates it cleanly. The warm-up ran across two days, then the sale opened the following day with its full code set attached, and closed a week later.

The warm-up is the best time to prepare, not to buy. Build the cart, claim seller coupons, and work out which spend threshold you are aiming for. Then check out the moment the codes go live, rather than discovering on the last day that your cart sits a dollar under a tier.

Because these windows are short and recur most months, a purchase that can wait a week or two is usually worth holding. AliExpress runs promotional periods far more often than the two or three headline events people plan around.

Free Shipping and Choice Listings

Delivery cost quietly cancels discounts, so it is worth handling as its own decision rather than an afterthought.

Free-shipping codes appear regularly, but filtering for Choice listings is the more reliable route, since they carry free-delivery thresholds and ship faster. A slightly higher Choice price often beats a cheaper listing once delivery is added, so compare the delivered total rather than the headline price.

Delivery times vary a great deal by shipping method and destination, and that variation matters more than most people expect when a sale deadline is involved. Our guide to AliExpress shipping times covers what each option actually delivers.

Is AliExpress Safe to Buy From?

It is a legitimate marketplace with buyer protection and a dispute process, and the platform holds payment until you confirm receipt. The risk on any marketplace is not the platform, it is the individual seller, which is why ratings and order volume matter more than the discount on a listing.

If that is the question you actually came with, our full answer on whether AliExpress is legit goes through buyer protection, refunds and how to read a seller properly before ordering.

Is AliExpress the Cheapest Option?

Not always, and the answer changes with order size rather than with the platform.

For a single low-cost item, shipping usually decides it. For anything bought in quantity, per-unit pricing on a wholesale platform can undercut AliExpress even before a code is applied. Our comparison of AliExpress, Alibaba and Joom works through which is genuinely cheaper at different order sizes, which is a more useful question than which is better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do bigger AliExpress orders get a better discount rate?
Barely. Across a full tier set, everything above about $35 of spend sits in a narrow band around 14%, so a $499 order is discounted at roughly the same rate as a $69 one. Only the very lowest tier is meaningfully worse. Clearing the nearest threshold is worth it, climbing the ladder is not.

Is it worth adding items to reach the next spend threshold?
Often yes, because the tiers are steps rather than a slope. Sitting a dollar below a threshold can cost you anywhere from $3 to $20 in lost discount depending on where you are on the ladder. Check the next minimum before you check out.

Do some countries get better AliExpress discounts?
The figures look very different but the rates do not. Comparing the top offer in each market against its own minimum spend puts every region between roughly 12% and 14.5%. Codes are also locked to the region they were issued for, so another country’s code will not apply to your order anyway.

Can I use more than one AliExpress discount on the same order?
Usually. Item discounts, seller coupons, sale codes and Coins sit in separate layers. Claim the seller coupon first, apply the sale code at checkout, then finish with Coins. Not every combination works on every order, so confirm the total before paying.

How long do AliExpress codes last?
It depends which kind. Event sale codes are tied to the event and typically run about a week. New account codes run on their own schedule and are often valid for a couple of months, which means they will still be available when the next sale starts.

How often does AliExpress have sales?
More often than most people plan for. Alongside the major annual events, there are shorter promotional windows most months, each with its own code set and its own spend tiers. Each one usually opens with a short warm-up period before the codes activate.

Where can I find codes that are actually live?
Our AliExpress codes and deals page lists current offers with the spend minimum and any region limit noted next to each one.
